Hazel Blake wished she didn’t always have to be the bearer of bad news.

She tapped into the link and let out a long sigh. “The Order’s hunters failed, grandmother. The vampires stopped them from getting the Mistress’s key.”

Her grandmother was silent, but Hazel could see the frustration emanating from her. If they were in a cartoon, her grandmother would have steam coming out of her ears. She almost felt bad for the hunters, since they were the focus of her grandmother’s anger. And knowing her grandmother, she was going to make it clear that failure would not be tolerated.

“Well then,” Dorothea drawled. “If we want something done right, granddaughter, we must do it ourselves, don’t we?”

The corners of the old witch’s face were pulled into a wicked grin. “Or better yet, we’ll let the Mistress of the Newport House do it for us. As of right now,” Dorothea purred, “Renata Courtenay believes we are looking for something, physical.” Her voice slowed. “Something tangible.”

“Grandmother,” Hazel asked, confused. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, what we seek is now closer than ever. The key to unlocking our ritual shall find its other half for us.” Dorothea sat back in her chair, looking pleased. “Everything is falling into place. We must keep toying with the Mistress of the Newport House until we have her exactly where we want her.”

Hazel’s brows stitched together in confusion.

Dorothea stroked her chin, ignoring her granddaughter, a sinister smile creeping on her face. “Then, all we’ll have to do is sit back and watch.”

Hazel wasn’t exactly sure what her grandmother was getting at, but she knew in the end, like always, the leader of the Nightblood witch coven would get her hands on what she really wanted—the lost ritual.

And without a doubt, the ancestors would walk this earth among them once more.

Her grandmother would see to that.
